Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Remove Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater thinking about the movie they're about to see. They notice the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is everything going on behind the scenes to make that experience possible—or what it takes when it's time to replace decades of hardware and make way for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers was able to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a distinctive commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we assisted with the removal of legacy projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your standard commercial move. It demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between reliable relocation partners.
Projects like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever quite the same, and that's what makes our work exciting.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the best aspects of commercial moving is the diversity.
One week we're moving an entire school before students return for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we are inside a movie theater, carefully dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was especially memorable because it required removing large digital cinema projection systems, along with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like going back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the industry standard.
For film lovers, it was fascinating.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Careful Planning
Jobs like this don't start when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is taken down, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Collaborating with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we coordinated every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the biggest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is gaining access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who share the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By combining Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with cramped corridors, constricted doorways, and restricted access. Some locations have elevators, whereas others don't. Relocating large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and making for the truck.
Every challenge must be anticipated before work even begins.
That's when experience makes the difference.
It's Truly About Far More Than Just Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is just about brute strength.
The truth is that commercial moving is about planning, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to carefully maneuver oversized equipment through narrow spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and safely loaded for transport.
Most of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition can lead to significant damage.
Communication and patience are every bit as important as strength.
Preserving the Building Is Every Bit as Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally committed to protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a significant investment, and even minor repairs can become disruptive and expensive.
Once a project is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Working Together Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a solo undertaking.
Every member of the crew has a specific role, and communication is critical from beginning to end.
One mover may be steering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another team member is prepping the next piece for transport.
When veteran crews work as a team, there's a rhythm that emerges. That's a skill that can't be taught overnight.
Watching our crew work together was a great example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Enjoyment Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Being employed inside movie theaters certainly had its perks.
Our team couldn't help heading downstairs for some movie snacks during breaks in jobs on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where not many people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
These moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also enjoy what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Just Transportation
Most people think moving companies simply load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees across a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment transported without disruption.
Many projects take place overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—involve carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every move calls for adaptability, planning, and problem solving.
Here at Baymeadows Movers, when a customer asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has been proudly serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've learned that smooth projects consistently come down to the same core principles:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll show up prepared, communicate throughout the project, treat their property with respect, and fix problems instead of causing them.
Whether we're on the job inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Preserving a Piece of Movie History
Among the surprising highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced lasting experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Being right there with them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company gets to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Personally, it really was a moment we'll never forget.
